TSARIST CONTROL OVER THE CHURCH
- Schism weakened church, but overall fortified tsarist state
- As the empire enlarged the power began to create dilemmas with the church
- Monasteries began to overtake the size of cities
- Church began to gain more and more power
- Began to threaten the government
- Government started to use monasteries as military fortresses during time of unrest
- Ivan III began to use church property for governmental use in order to establish authority
- Peter the Great started a church council that looked after religious and church affairs
- Tsar chose members of council
- Required church officials to report any suspicious or criminal activity
- By the early 1700's the government made church a department of the state
